27th Regional Training Course on Managing Vegetable Production and Marketing

Addressing the growing needs of the South East Asian region for the efficient production and marketing of vegetables in the face of globalization and other emerging production and marketing challenges, AVRDC-The World Vegetable Center will continue with its annual 3 month modular Regional Training Course (27th). The course, which will be conducted from 3 November 2008 to 30 January 2009, is designed to provide vegetable researchers and extension workers with the necessary skills and technical knowledge, emphasizing on good agricultural practice (GAP), impact assessments, indigenous vegetables, post- harvest technologies, integrated pest management and farmer education.

Dr. J.D.H. Keatinge, the Center's new Director General, assumes duty: Maintaining the "pro-poor" focus and fostering partnerships

"Prosperity for the poor and health for all" through better and safer vegetables. With this focus, Dr. John Donough Heber Keatinge assumed his duties as Director General of AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center on 14 April 2008.

Dr. Keatinge brings a wealth of experience in international agricultural research and development to the post of Director General. He has held senior management positions with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Syria and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Nigeria. Since 2002 he has served as Deputy Director General - Research at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India.

AVRDC-ARC in collaboration with Ha Tinh Province and Plant Protection Sub Department (PPsD) opens a new Farmer Field School

In line with the work plan of the IFAD-AVRDC-ARC Project on “Integrating Safe and Off-season Vegetable Production with Marketing through Information, Education and Training in Ha Tinh and Tra Vinh Provinces, Vietnam” a new Farmer Field School (FFS) was officially opened on 18 March, 2008 in Xom Dua Village, Thach My Commune, Loc Ha District of Ha Tinh Province.
