An interview with five alumni from the RTC of AVRDC-ARC

Mr. Myint Lwin

Current Position: Farm Manager, Yat Thit Farm, Pauk khaing Township, Bago Division (West)

Responsibilities: Mango production, production of mango planting materials and collection of mango germplasm

Class of 16th RTC, (October 1997-March 1998), sponsored by SDC.

Found the RTC training useful in providing him more confidence to take up his new post as Farm Manager. Upon returning to Myanmar he brought back AVRDC accessions of Mungbean and conducted trial to determine the performance of KPS2 and later distributed this variety to farmers in the country. He is a participant at the Needs Assessment Workshop to share his experience on the needs of Vegetable Research and Development.

Mr. Hla Soe

Current Position: Assistant Manager, CARTC, Hlegu

Responsibilities: In charge of Jatropha cultivation, a biofuel programme

Class of 17th RTC (1998-1999). Sponsored by SDC

Prior to participating at the RTC, Mr. Hla was an extension officer. He was unfamiliar with vegetable production and joins the RTC built up his knowledge and skills. Upon his return he joined the Vegetable and Fruits Research and Development Center, Hlegu and worked with a JICA expert on vegetable research. Following the four years working in research, Mr. Hla returned to work as an extension officer and was posted to the North West near the border with Bangladesh. Two years ago, he returned to CARTC as an Assistant Manager and warden for the dormitory. He found the training at the RTC as a useful way to pick up vegetable knowledge and brought the information to assist him at his work in VFRDC. He recommended that the RTC should continue to provide training to scientists and extension officers in Myanmar as a means to enhance agriculture development in the country.

Ms. Cho Mar Tin

Current Position: Officer in charge of Horticulture and Vegetable Section at CARTC, Hlegu

Responsibilities: Coordinate and lecture to participants of training courses at CARTC on vegetables and fruit production. This includes small field experiments on vegetables.

Class of 18th RTC (October 1999 – March 2000), sponsored by SDC

She was unprepared for her job and participation at the RTC enhanced her confidence to produce vegetables and give lectures. This increased confidence allowed her to perform her duties more efficiently with more confidence. She expressed appreciation for the experience and learning opportunities offered by the RTC and recommended that it should continue to provide opportunities to officers in Myanmar to increase their research and development skills. Ms. Myint Myint Win

Current Position: Deputy Supervisor, Plant Protection Laboratory, CARTC, Hlegu

Responsibilities: Lecturer on plant protection for participants to training courses organized by CARTC. Responsible for all pest management activities at the centre.

Class of 19th RTC (2000-2001) Sponsored by SDC

Learned about the role of Trichoderma as an antagonist of soil-borne pathogens and is now responsible for lecturing on this subject. She acquired more confidence after attending RTC.

Ms. Ei Ei Htwe

Current Position: Assistant Supervisor, Vegetable and Fruit Research and Development Centre (VFRDC), Hlegu

Responsibilities: In charge of Soil and Nutrient Laboratory

Class of 19th RTC (October 2000-March 2001) Sponsored by ASEAN-Regional Harmonisation Programme

At the RTC, she participated in three separate studies to improve her skills in conducting experiments and confident in doing her job when she returned to Myanmar. She is now currently active in studying the effects of different organic fertilizers on tomato and ginger. (email: hortimas@mas.com.mm)
